I Leave You My Dreams
Published in Paperback by Coleman and Coleman (June, 2001)
Author: Bernadene High Coleman
Average review score:

The Power of a Mother's Love
I Leave You My Dreams is an engrossing story of how one African-American family, from rural Louisiana, travels to Los Angeles, California in search of a better life. Set during World War II and the postwar, the matriarch of the family, Cora, is determined to raise her five girls without the constraints of poverty and racism that were so prevalent in the South. The family's hopes lie within Cora's dreams for her children. She will stop at nothing to secure a better future for her girls. The Hightower family includes Webb, Cora's philandering husband; Doralee, the eldest child, is a college student; Bernice is the studious one; Ruth is the curious child and Wanda and Muriel are the youngest girls. Cora bestows upon each child her dreams for them and how they should go about obtaining these goals.

This novel could easily be categorized as a timeless, Christian fiction novel because this mother's faith is the backbone of the family's dreams and desires. This is a remarkable and well-written story laced with courage, forgiveness and the power of a higher being. The transitions from present to the past are smooth and concise leaving no unanswered questions. This is a novel, through Cora's words and thoughts, that will empower and inspire.

I, Pearl heart
In the last several years i,ve been reading like there's no tomorrow . in that time, the words of approximately 1000 books have traveled through my mind (all western). at the end of each i write on the front page a short comment. some i"ve had to use a 3x5 card for more space. I,pearl heart is one of those books. the story will make your heart feel like you should jump into the book and help pearl get through life. i felt like jumping in and strangling some of the villians, hugging the very few good people. i am emotional anyway but was surely hopping pearl would find happinees by the end, or i,d burn the book. this was one of the best books ever.

Ida Applebroog: Nothing Personal, Paintings 1987-1997
Published in Hardcover by Distributed Art Publishers (June, 1998)
Authors: Ida Applebroog, Terrie Sultan, Arthur Coleman Danto, Dorothy Allison, and Corcoran Gallery of Art

A Great First Impression
During my first year of Graduate school towards earning my MFA I was asked if I had ever heard of Ida Appleboorg. I admitted that I had never heard of her and asked what she did. After a brief conversation ending with me writing down her name and promising I would look into her work I went to the university's library. They had a couple books and I spent hours pouring through them over and over until I knew I wanted to see more.

I ordered this book and have about worn it out. First it is a beautiful full color book with a beautiful format. It contains both installation and individual views of her work. I really was able to get a sense of the artist and how she paints. It is a beautiful book and a broad introduction to a great contemporary artist. What a role model for young female artists.

If I Could Raise My Kids Again
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (May, 1996)
Authors: William L. Coleman and Arthur Coleman

Learning From Someone Who's Been There
"It takes wisdom to have a good family, and it takes understanding to make it strong." Proverbs 24:3.

William Coleman has been married for more than thirty years and is the father of three children. In his book, IF I COULD RAISE MY KIDS AGAIN, Coleman shares his insights and lessons he's learned over the years. I find that I learn best from other parents who openly share their experiences. Coleman's vulnerability and frankness combined with Biblical teaching and his collection of personal stories, made his book an enjoyable read and an effective teacher.

The 22 short chapters cover a variety of parenting related topics. The chapters are: The Grand Tour; Stand on the Chairs and Shout; Aim for Respect Before Love; Let Them Pull the Cat's Tail; Spend More Time Together; Find a Church Life; Learning From Our Children; Give Them More Choices; I'd Smile More; The Relative Connection; Soothe the Savage; Pitch a Tent; Build Self-Confidence; Ride the Screaming Plunger; Set Unusual Goals; The Battle for the Supper Hour; Get Control of the Television; Share and Pray; The Almighty Dollar; Let Them Argue More; We'd Play More Games; and Graduation Time.

When my wife and I were expecting our first child, I knew that I had no idea what I was doing. I went out and bought a few books on parenting with the desire to begin building a strong parenting foundation that I could build on over the years. IF I COULD RAISE MY KIDS AGAIN is one book that I will regularly go back to.

powerful poetry
Wanda Coleman speaks clearly and powerfully in this book of poems. You won't find many "typical" love poems here -- the subject matter is sometimes brutal but always honest. My favorite poem in this collection is her account of the night that the fast food taco restaurant, where she was working, got held up. I won't spoil the poem for you because the unexpected outcome is part of the force of this poem. I'd highly recommend that you read it for yourself!

Joe Coleman: The Man of Sorrows

Crucifixion Redux
This beautiful book is an affordable Joe Coleman collectable. I enjoy this the most of any of his work. While some may find this book sacrilegious, I'd say their interpretation of Christ - if this book offends - is what's truly a sacrilege.

While this book many not mirror the perspective of Christ, it certainly seems to capture the agony of the crucifixion saga in a human perspective - even if that human is a little out of the ordinary.

An entire picture of the crucifixion is first presented, then it's component elements are presented in individual die cuts from sections of the paining; each picture's individual story is told by Coleman in a font obviously based on his handwriting. Gold text printed on black paper.

18 tipped-in plates.

Beautifully written! A must for all dog lovers!
A poignant, provocative story of dogs and their importance in our lives. Communicative, intuitive companions, dogs provide opportunity and assistance for human learning and growth. This book presents unique observations of the canine world, gleaned over the author's lifetime involvement with these special creatures. The author discusses the significant bonding of humans and dogs, provides comfort and insight into the grief and pain of pet loss and offers a fresh perspective on the spiritual nature enbodied in our noble friend, the dog. I have given copies to over 8 people, all loved this book!

Kevin and Ben
Published in Paperback by The Business Word (01 February, 1998)
Authors: Gail S. Coleman and Gail S. Coleman
Average review score:

Adorable and clever book about twins
This book is a book about identical twins designed for the young preschool reader. Although the illustrations aren't quite as wonderful as the text, the book is a delight both aurally and visually. Kevin and Ben are identical twin boys who bring their parents joy, exhausation and even confusion -- their parents can't tell them apart at one point. I won't spoil the surprise by telling you how the mistake is ultimately set right.

Written in clever and readable rhyme, the book follows the boys from birth to big boy-hood and concludes with a really touching observation that, despite some of the inevitable pitfalls of having an identical twin, there is a special quality to the relationship that more than compensates for those pitfalls.

A must-read for anyone with young twins and a pleasure for anyone with young children.

I only wish this book were published in hardcover, as it should be to match its status as a classic.
